On June 24, 2022 Kayaking Delmarva returned to Smith Island with Delmarva Birding Weekends to view the nesting Brown Pelicans. It’s estimated 1,000 Brown Pelicans build their nests a short distance from Smith Island. On the high tide one may approach by small boat maintaining a respectable distance.
On Mothers Day 2022 a storm wiped out the nests of the Brown Pelicans. They have rebuilt but as a result the chicks are late hatching and had not yet made an appearance on our trip. It hardly mattered as the pelican watching and other birding was exceptional.
For more information visit the Delmarva Birding Weekends page for information on this trip and their other birding trips. Kayaking Delmarva birds with them regularly and highly recommend any of their trips.
