On September 11, 2019 we launched from Saxis, Virginia: one of our favorite paddles on the Virginia Eastern Shore. Saxis is a little town with a beautiful location especially for kayakers. On this anniversary of 9/11 we had wonderful sun, but it was a little windy. Here are our photos.
An entourage of birds greeted us as we launched from the public boat ramp. We highly recommend the soft shelled crabs at Captain E’s Hurricane Bar and Grill next to the boat ramp. Leaving Saxis one paddles by the seawall and turns left into Drum BayOn today’s journey we paddled to the far end of Drum Bay and walked the beach exploring. Heading up the beach we passed by the remains of an old dock.A large grouping of cormorants were clucking at the crashing waves.Enjoying the many stretches of scenic sand beaches around Drum Bay. Returning to our kayaks we circumnavigated Drum BayA flock of brown pelicans. We found some passage ways and decided to explore. From the GPS map it looked like we would eventually hit a dead end but we decided to go for it.The passageway through the marsh grass got narrower and narrower until it was barely as wide as our kayaks. It eventually hit a dead end inside a large pond with no outlet. The GPS was right. After hitting the dead end we backtracked the way we had come and found our way into Saxis once more.This map from our GPS shows our meandering adventure. It was a beautiful day for a nice paddle.
Directions to Saxis, VA. South on Va. 113 from Pocomoke, MD. Right on Rt. 695. (app. 10 miles south of intersection of Rt. 13 and 113 in Pocomoke.) Saxis is at the end of the road! Launch is at harbor where there is a nice rest room facility and plenty of parking.
There are two small restaurants in Saxis. We have eaten at Capt E.s several times.
