We kayak Nassawango Creek near Snow Hill frequently by launching at Byrd Park in Snow Hill. Paddling two miles downstream on the Pocomoke River brings one to Nassawango Creek on the right. This is always a delightful excursion.

An optional launch we chose in the fall of 2021 was to launch instead from Red House Road near the upper end of the navigable part of Nassawango Creek. Only once had we paddled from Snow Hill to this spot as often it’s difficult to find a water trail through the upper reaches of Nassawango Creek.

Parking is limited along Red House Road to just the roadside.

The Nature Conservancy manages most of the land in this area resulting in an incredibly scenic area. Delmarva Birding Weekends also often offers kayaking trips in this area in the spring to view the abundant warblers.

There is no slope to the launch at the bridge. Instead launching involves placing your kayak in the water and stepping in. Once on the water the scenery is spectacular and serene. Smaller kayaks do better in some of the tight areas but we used one of our 16 foot Tarpons and managed well.

The first mile or so is through an area with a number of cypress trees.

Several miles downstream one reaches the Frances Uhler take out which includes several benches. This is a great place for a rest stop, but be aware the bank has eroded and it’s a sloppy take out.

Below the rest area the creek widens considerable as it finally flows into the Pocomoke River.

The barrel in this tree resulted in a lot of head scratching.

Returning upstream we spotted an eagle’s nest which had not been visible paddling the opposite direction.

We highly recommend Nassawango Creek as a delightful paddle from either direction.

Directions: From Rt. 12 about a mile west of Snow Hill turn south onto Red House Rd. The bridge over Nassawango Creek is within a few miles. Park well off the edge of the road for loading and unloading.
